The Missing Link: Long-Duration Energy Storage and the Future of Europe’s Energy Security
On 2 June 2025, Energy Storage Europe was pleased to host a webinar with over 600 registrations, together with co-organisers addressing the “Long-Duration Energy Storage and the Future of Europe’s Energy Security”.
As Europe’s energy system becomes increasingly reliant on renewable generation, prolonged periods of low wind and solar output, known as Dunkelflaute events, are raising important questions about system adequacy and security of supply.
This webinar explored whether Europe’s current market and regulatory framework provides the right signals and incentives to deploy long-duration energy storage (LDES) at the scale needed to support a resilient and decarbonised power system. Discussions will focus on the implementation of the Electricity Market Design (EMD) Reform, the review of the European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA) methodology, and the future of EU energy security policies.
Building on the joint industry letter published in January 2026 calling for a framework to procure LDES, the event will bring together stakeholders to discuss practical solutions, market design, and the future role of long-duration storage in Europe’s clean energy transition.

Speakers:

Killian Daly, Energy Tag:
Killian is the Executive Director of EnergyTag, a non-profit organization driving decarbonization in the power sector by advancing electricity markets and carbon accounting. With teams in Europe, North America and Asia, EnergyTag collaborates with hundreds of leading organizations globally, spanning the electricity sector, civil society and governments. Killian has advised institutions, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), US Federal Government, European Commission, on clean energy markets. He serves on influential committees shaping the future of electricity carbon accounting, such as the GHG Protocol Scope 2 Update and has been featured in leading media publications such as the Financial Times and Bloomberg. Killian was named a 2026 World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in recognition of his clean energy work. Before leading EnergyTag, Killian managed global energy strategy at Air Liquide, one of the world’s largest industrial companies. He holds a Master’s degree in Energy Technologies from the University of Cambridge.

Oghosa Erhahon, LDES Council:
Oghosa Erhahon is the Policy and Markets Manager at the LDES Council, shaping global policy and market design for long-duration energy storage (LDES) and its integration in power systems and for industrial applications. She has previously was a Technical Advisor on the Global Hydrogen Diplomacy Programme and works on clean energy infrastructure policy across Europe, Africa, and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Antoine Koen, Future Cleantech Architects:
Antoine Koen is an engineer specialized in energy technologies, with a PhD in thermal energy storage. He currently serves as the lead analyst for energy systems at non-profit think tank Future Cleantech Architects. His work concerns the challenge of building a resilient and clean energy system, with a focus on how to provide much-needed systems flexibility for renewables, such as through energy storage.

Ruben Davis, Cleantech for Europe:
Ruben Davis is Senior Policy Officer at Cleantech for Europe, working at the intersection of policy and innovation to accelerate the scale-up of Europe’s cleantech industry.

Aurelien Ballagny, Flow Batteries Europe:
Aurélien has a decade of experience in EU affairs in the fields of energy and environment. He previously worked at Energy Storage Europe, represented the Energy Storage Coalition, and is now Head of Policy at Flow Batteries Europe. With a legal background, Aurélien’s expertise includes State Aid and procurement.

Céline Le Goazigo, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)
Céline Le Goazigo is Energy Lead at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), where she drives work on electrification an grid readiness, low-carbon energy solutions (CCS, carbon removals), resilience and physical risk for critical infrastructure and accounting frameworks for the energy sector alongside leading companies worldwide. She is also a member of the SBTi Power Sector Expert Advisory Group since 2025.
Before joining WBCSD in 2022, she held senior roles at Electricité de France (EDF) in France, building expertise across energy markets, asset optimisation and trading, cross-border structured contract negotiation and sustainable finance for asset and liability management. She holds an engineering degree in Information and Decision Systems and a double Master of Science in Digital Signal and Image Processing from Cranfield University (UK) and Tampere University of Technology (Finland).

Carolina Cruz, Energy Storage Europe
Carolina Cruz represents the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Task Force at Energy Storage Europe, where she works on advancing the policy and regulatory framework needed to scale energy storage across Europe. Her work focuses on enabling energy storage to be properly integrated into EU market design and policy frameworks, ensuring it can deliver flexibility, support renewable integration, and contribute to security of supply in a decarbonised power system. She has contributed to policy work on LDES, including the paper “Policy Options to Anticipate Europe’s Long-Duration Energy Storage Deployment,” which outlines key barriers and solutions to accelerate deployment in Europe.
