AVANGUARD

AVANGUARD is building a free, open-source digital platform where European energy stakeholders can plan and evaluate Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies.

Europe’s energy transition depends on storing renewable energy over long periods and dispatching it when needed the most. That is the promise of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES), and the challenge that the EU-funded AVANGUARD project is built to address.

As Europe strives for climate neutrality and the uptake of renewable energy sources increases, LDES technologies play a central role in this transition: they provide backup for intermittent renewable supply, help address seasonal storage gaps, and increase electricity grid reliability.

However, the system currently lacks a shared, open way to assess and plan for LDES: grid operators, investors, planners and regulators are using fragmented tools, and need accessible ways to communicate with each other.

AVANGUARD is set up to change this picture by developing a digital platform and data hub to give stakeholders the tools to evaluate, plan and design LDES projects.

AVANGUARD brings together 30 partners from 13 countries, spanning academia, industry and policymaking. The project will draw on shared data and will be tested across Use Cases in four European regions: Spain and Portugal; Croatia; Denmark and Sweden; Italy.

Check out AVANGUARD’s LinkedIn account – the project’s website is under construction and will be live in early September 2026.
