SMART-ESS

SMART-ESS develops and demonstrates at grid scale an integrated control framework for energy storage that combines degradation aware hybrid modelling, multi-service optimisation, real-time hybrid AI control, and a progressively activated digital twin within a federated architecture. It addresses the gap between today’s rule-based EMS and the adaptive, safety-governed control needed for high-renewable power systems. The framework is validated at TRL 7 through four field pilots covering utility-scale Li-ion BESS in Italy, industrial demand response in Greece, CSP with thermal storage in Portugal, and cross-border PHES in Croatia–Bosnia and Herzegovina. Two additional replication studies in Spain and Romania assess transferability without full redeployment. SMART-ESS applies a staged digital twin progression from shadow to advisory and active control, with formal acceptance gates and mandatory PHIL/HIL validation before real-asset closed-loop operation. Key targets include at least 15% revenue improvement, 10–15% lifetime extension, strong operator acceptance, and compliance with fast-response grid service requirements. The 22-partner consortium from nine countries brings together research organisations, TSOs, energy storage owners, and technology providers, linking scientific innovation to operational deployment and supporting Europe’s clean energy and grid digitalisation goals
