From Research to Deployment: H2IF Shares Lessons on Scaling Clean-Energy Innovation
How can promising research results become industrial projects ready for the market?H2IF’s new article explores this challenge, drawing on the project’s work to connect EU-funded energy-storage and hydrogen innovations with deployment opportunities, including the Innovation Fund.
The article looks at how H2IF screened 288 projects, assessed promising technologies and supported prospective applicants through tailored guidance and preparation. It distils the lessons learned along the way: technical progress alone is not enough. Clear ownership, industrial commitment, a credible business case and realistic planning for finance all help determine whether an innovation can move towards deployment.
The article also presents H2IF’s five-stage framework, which starts at research-project design and continues through implementation, market-readiness assessment, transition planning and application preparation. Its central message is that scale-up planning should begin early and evolve alongside the research, not be left until the project ends.

Energy Storage Europe welcomes the European Commission's growing focus on cybersecurity in the energy sector and supports the direction of travel across the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), the Network Code on Cybersecurity, and the proposed Cybersecurity Act (CSA) 2.0. Yet raises concerns that require targeted corrections to ensure these frameworks deliver on their security objectives without inadvertently slowing battery storage deployment.
Energy Storage Europe replies to the European Commission’s public consultation on the Methodology for the Calculation of the recycled content of industrial and EV batteries. Under the Batteries Regulation, several categories of batteries, including industrial batteries, will have to contain a certain percentage of recycled metals to be allowed to be placed on the EU market.
