Europe's energy storage capacity surges past nuclear as system needs grow

Europe added a record 13.5 GW / 26.4 GWh of electrochemical energy storage in 2025, surpassing 100 GW of installed storage capacity across all technologies for the first time, according to the latest European Market Monitor on Energy Storage (EMMES), published by LCP Delta and Energy Storage Europe. Reaching 102.7 GW of installed capacity marks a major milestone for the sector and highlights the growing role of storage in supporting Europe's energy transition.

Now in its tenth edition, the report provides a comprehensive overview of energy storage deployment across the EU, Great Britain, Norway, and Switzerland. While storage deployment continues to accelerate, the analysis finds that significant growth potential remains in every European market as renewable energy capacity expands and electricity demand rises through the electrification of transport, heating, and industry.

Behind-the-meter (BtM) storage has been a major driver of growth, reaching 30.2 GW / 46.2 GWh of installed electrochemical capacity by the end of 2025. Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, and Great Britain continue to lead deployment, supported by increasing solar-plus-storage adoption, dynamic electricity tariffs, greater electrification, and participation in flexibility markets.

Front-of-the-meter (FoM) battery storage has also expanded rapidly, reaching 18.5 GW / 34.4 GWh by the end of 2025. Growth has been strongest in countries with established capacity markets, including Great Britain, Italy, Poland, and Belgium, as well as markets benefiting from dedicated storage support schemes such as Italy, Bulgaria, Poland, and Spain.

Compared with last year's outlook, EMMES 10.0 increases expectations for utility-scale battery deployment by 25%, reflecting stronger market fundamentals, growing project pipelines, and increasing confidence in the role of storage within Europe's future energy system.

LCP Delta and Energy Storage Europe expect continued growth across all storage segments through to 2030. Germany and Italy are forecast to dominate behind-the-meter storage deployment, while Great Britain and Italy are expected to lead front-of-the-meter capacity. As storage scales further, efficient grid connections, fair market participation, and market frameworks that properly value storage will be essential to unlocking its full potential.

Silvestros Vlachopoulos, Energy Storage Research Manager at LCP Delta and lead author of the report, said: "The continued growth in energy storage shows that the industry recognises its value and benefits. While this momentum is encouraging, the focus must now shift to keeping pace with rising demand. Our analysis indicates that energy storage will continue to expand through to 2030, providing a clearer picture of where additional support is needed to ensure its success."

Jacopo Tosoni, Deputy Secretary-General and Head of Policy at Energy Storage Europe, added: "The European storage market is entering a new phase. Reaching over 100 GW of installed storage capacity is a remarkable achievement, but the greatest opportunity still lies ahead. No European country has yet reached its storage potential, while electrification, renewable deployment, and system needs continue to grow."
